Back to Australia's UFO History.

The sighting by Captains Walter Gardin and Gordan Smith, occurred as the plane was cruising at 8,000 feet. The two men saw a large craft surrounded by five smaller ones. The formation seemed to keep alongside the plane. The pilots managed to radio Kalgoorlie Department of Civil Aviation, who told them there should be no other traffic in the area, before they lost communication on all frequencies. At this point they saw the main ship split into two and the smaller ships then took turns of joining with one of  the halves of the main craft. The event lasted about ten minutes during which time the main ship reconnected, and then split in two again, several times. The craft all followed a similar pattern as they connected and disconnected. The pilots remarked on the ability of the craft to turn and change direction instantly, without the need for a turning circle. After ten minutes the formation joined together and left at tremendous speed. The plane's radio communications were restored immediately after the UFO disappeared. The craft were all a dark colour and the main ship had seemed to be able to change it's shape, from a spheroid to a slightly more elongated form.
Years later the pilots confirmed that they had been asked not to discuss the encounter with anyone.

Two men, one an American, were on the Eyre Highway near the border between South Australia and Western Australia in 1977, when they saw a purple-green fireball crash nearby.
They came to the place and one of them entered the craft where he found two aliens, one dead and the other uttering a slight squealing noise. Both in appearance were pot-bellied, about one and a half metres tall, and had long, thin arms. Their eyes were large and black and they had no ears or hair. When the men emerged from the wreck they found military personnel on the scene, who arrested them and promptly took them away from the crash site. The American disappeared (apparently he was absent without leave from the armed services) and the Australian, who was also a soldier, was put in custody for two weeks and persuaded that what he had seen was a normal aircraft crash. He claims that he has subsequently heard of several other UFO crashes which have been "cleared up in great secrecy by the military."

The eight white circular objects in the picture are known as radomes and are designed to keep dust, sand, etc. out of the satellite dishes, but they also conceal the antenna's direction from enemy spy satellites. The computer room at the station is 5600 square metres in size and is divided into three sections; the Station Keeping Section, which has responsibility for keeping the satellites at their correct geo-stationary orbit, the Signals Processing Office (SPO) and the Signals Analysis Section (SAS).The Pine Gap facility has a wide range of communication services at it's disposal, (HF) radio, underground cable, Telstra telephone and telex link, and 2 satellite communications terminals. The primary landline communication link for the base is provided by TELSTRA, via the trans Pacific under-sea cable sea system which links the US and Australia. In around 1968 a HF antenna was installed in the northern edge of the facility, with the interna

tional call sign VL5TY, and this provides a direct link to the US base, Clark Field, in the Philippines. All communications to or from Pine Gap are encrypted in either the Signals Processing Office or the National Cypher and communications room. Two Univac computers are used to encrypt the transmissions, while two cryptographic machines (a KW-7 and a KG-13 for teletype and voice encryption respectively) communicate with the TRW's buildings in Redondo Beach, California. The Communications Vault in TRW's building M-4 code named PEDAL is a major point in the Pine Gap communications system, of the 25 to 30 messages sent from Pine Gap each day about half of these are directed to CIA (code named PILOT) headquarters in Langley Virginia. Pine Gap is by far the most important US facility in Australia but is also the most secret.
