These are the images that were taken by the Viking Mars probe in 1976, and prompted the more recent Mars Global Surveyor Mission which provided the above image as it circled Mars over 200 times. The recent Observer Mission was a failure though, much like the Phobos Mission, as the US lost contact with Observer as it approached Mars.
